Planned Giving

Leave a Legacy, Build a Future

Creating a planned gift with Knoxville Habitat for Humanity allows you to leave a lasting impact on your community, supporting affordable housing for generations to come. This thoughtful planning can take various forms and provides different benefits, including potential financial advantages for you and your loved ones.

Accepted Types of Planned Giving
Remainder Interests in Property

Retained Life Estate:

KHFH may accept a remainder interest in a retained life estate, allowing the donor or designated occupants to use the property for life, subject to Board and/or legal review for costs and liability. During the donor’s lifetime, the donor remains responsible for all property maintenance, taxes, insurance, and related expenses. Upon the donor’s death, KHFH may retain the property or liquidate it.

Life Insurance Policies

KHFH may accept life insurance gifts only when it is named the irrevocable owner and beneficiary, and the gift is not recorded until this designation is complete. KHFH will not pay future premiums unless prior arrangements and sufficient donor funding are provided; additional premium payments made to KHFH will be treated as charitable contributions. If premiums are not maintained, KHFH may continue payments, convert the policy to paid-up insurance, or surrender it for cash value, with the policy recorded at its cash surrender value and acknowledged per IRS requirements.

Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designations

Donors may name KHFH as a beneficiary of retirement plan assets such as IRAs, 401(k)s, or 403(b)s. These designations are revocable and are not recorded as gifts until they become irrevocable, typically at the donor’s death. If a designation becomes irrevocable during the donor’s lifetime, the present value of the gift may be recorded in accordance with applicable accounting standards.

Charitable Bequests

Donors may include KHFH in their wills or living trusts through unrestricted or restricted charitable bequests. Unrestricted bequests are accepted without review, while restricted bequests require legal and Board approval if they fall outside KHFH’s mission or raise ethical, legal, financial, political, or reputational concerns. Bequests are not recorded as gifts until they become irrevocable, typically at the donor’s death, unless they become irrevocable during life and are recorded at present value under applicable accounting standards.

Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations

Donors may name KHFH as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Because these designations are typically revocable, they are not recorded as gifts until they become irrevocable, usually at the donor’s death. If a designation becomes irrevocable during the donor’s lifetime, the present value of the gift may be recorded in accordance with applicable accounting standards.

Endowed Funds

KHFH may accept gifts to existing endowed funds or to establish new endowed funds that align with its mission, values, and strategic priorities, including funds named in honor or memory of individuals or entities. Establishing a new endowed fund requires a written agreement, a minimum gift or pledge of $25,000 (fulfilled within five years), and approval by KHFH leadership, with the right to decline any gift that raises ethical, legal, financial, political, or reputational concerns. Gifts involving higher risk or complexity—such as real estate, debt-encumbered assets, international sources, or potential conflicts of interest—require additional review and may be declined to protect KHFH’s integrity and financial stability.
